◎简　　介　

　　马文•尤德尔是个有洁癖的作家，虽然其作品以爱情题材居多，但生活里他对待别人苛刻、爱挑剔，经常让人下不来台。所以说，他的人缘很差。他每天都到同一家餐厅的同一个座位吃同样的早餐，而且为他服务的也总是那位叫卡罗尔的女侍。马文的邻居西蒙是位艺术家，也是位同性恋者，在一次抢劫事件中受了伤。这些本无瓜葛的人却因西蒙的小狗走到了一起，每个人的生活也都发生了不小的变化……

　　编导为自己设置了一个几乎不可调解的矛盾，然后一环环解开，而这过程与一般爱情戏迥异，有点酸，有点涩，有点辛辣，但绝对不甜不腻。影片的点睛之语：“你只要看人看得时间长一点，都会发现他们的人情味。”个性独特的人物为演员提供了广阔的发挥空间，三位主角均有上乘的表演。尼科尔森想说别人好话却句句伤人的情景，是显示人物个性层次感和矛盾性的出彩点，也是考验演员实力的难点。

•Melvin一角原定约翰•屈伏塔，而Carol则是霍利•亨特。

•杰克•尼克尔森把他的奥斯卡奖献给了跟他在《好人寥寥》中合作的明星J.T.•沃尔什。沃尔什在1998年奥斯卡颁奖前夕去世。

•影片在香港的译名叫《猫屎先生》，这是因为Melvin的发音跟"猫屎"在广东话中一样。
