数学天才约翰尼殊在美国普林斯顿大学求学时就成为老师眼中的问题学生，同窗口中的孤僻少年。约翰愈是受到他人的歧视，愈是激发他找出惊世理论的决心。终于，约翰提出的“平衡理论”推翻了当代经济学之父亚当史密夫150年来的学说，赢得了数学界的另眼相看，也改变了他的一生。
时值冷战时期，约翰虽然获邀在麻省理工执教鞭。这时，一名情报局人员向约翰招手，要罗致他成为国家解码专家。约翰如愿以偿在政府工作，同时也认识了美丽良善的艾丽诗。二人一拍即合，相识没多久随即闪电结婚。由于工作关系，约翰知道不少政府机密，开始堕进精神分裂状态，不时妄想自己被亲近的人陷害，最后更被送进精神病院接受治疗。在妻子艾丽诗的鼓励下，约翰重新振作，重返普林斯顿大学教书。约翰承认自己精神异常的同时，努力钻研“平衡理论”，终于在 1994年获得诺贝尔经济科学奖。
本片是前诺贝尔奖得主、著名数学家约翰福布斯（John Forbes Nash Jr.）的传记故事，约翰福布斯不仅是一位数学奇才，私生活也非常耐人寻味：他是一位双性恋者，曾因在男性休息室曝露下体被拘禁，婚姻之外又有了私生子，更绝的是人到中年时竟患上精神分裂症，天才与白痴一线之差，他曾于50年代研究出经济学的“博弈理论”（Game Theory），40年后才获得了诺贝尔经济学奖。
影片讲述约翰福布斯年纪轻轻就已显露数学天分，一举成名。可是又偏偏患上精神分裂症，在漫长的日子中从痛苦经历寻回自我。经过多年的奋斗，和太太的鼓励，终于抹去生命中的悲剧色彩，更成为诺贝尔奖得主。镜头对准了他和妻子之间的关系以及精神病态恢复正常的过程，为我们展示了约翰福布斯多姿多彩的人生。
